No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
NCLB Overview
No Child Left Behind was enacted on January 3, 2001 with the purpose of closing the achievement gap with accountability, flexibility, and choice, so that no child is left behind.
Please see the US Department of Education’s Facts and Terms Every Parent Should Know About NCLB.
Title 1
This is the part of No Child Left Behind that supports programs in schools and school districts to improve the learning of children from low-income families. The U.S. Department of Education provides Title I funds to states to give to school districts based on the number of children from low-income families in each district. Usually low-income status is determined by student’s elgibility for free/reduced lunches.
Years ago, most Title I schools were Targeted Assistance schools meaning individual children were identified for support services and Title I resources were only to be used for those children.
Now, most Title I schools operate under the schoolwide model where schools are able to co-mingle funds (Title I, English as a Second Language, Talented and Gifted, Special Education…). The following link provides guidance on the use of Title I funds: http://www.ed.gov/programs/tit…..alguid.pdf
You can find evaluations for Title I programs at the Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development site.
The list of Portland Public Schools 2009/10 Title I schools can be found here.
The PPS Title I District Parent Advisory Committee (DPAC) meets monthly on every third Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Windows Cafeteria at the district central office, 501 N. Dixon Street. A buffet dinner is served at 6:15 PM and childcare is provided. Click here for more information about the committee.
