A lot of the success at Forest Grove according to this video is that the teachers themselves form the curriculum and have the say of how it is to be improved. It is nice that their test scores have increased, but this seems to be more about freeing up teachers to really take control of the educational environment to get real buy in. Lots of motivational theory talks about autonomy, mastery, and control of your own goals and the process (ownership). It seems almost essential to this type of improvement. Not a surprise to people who pay attention to motivational theory — but a big surprise to PPS’s top down approach to increasing their test scores, without improving education.
