Stuck for 41 Hours
If you were going to be Trapped in an Elevator for 41 Hours with someone who is involved in public education, who would you want that person to be at the local level? National level?

Arne Duncan. The man is a menace. He needs deprogramming. Notice that he’s never in a place where he faces questions from serious opponents. He’s big but I think I could take him if things got heated.
I’d either go with Duncan or Bill Gates (national level), and either Ron Herndon or Steve Buel at the local level (for a good history lesson on local issues; Bill Bigelow would be a great one, too. And Linda Christensen. We have a LOT of great local people – they’re just not at BESC).
I’m not sure it’s possible to deprogram Duncan (oh, believe me, I wish we could). Like Joe says, he never puts himself in a position where he has to answer real questions. And, if you do ask him something tough, he just says, “I’ll get back to you on that.” Never does. He brought his Chicago communications department with him to DC, so we’re likely to see the same thing at the national level.
Malcolm Gladwell. I would love to get him going on the falacious testing programs and how they overshadow everything else and are so destructive because of it. KL if you ever want to chat just pick up the phone — I’m in the phone book. I’ll pass on the elevator. Thanks for the compliment.
